Erdington Library will now be opening into the evening twice a week following additional funding secured to cover the cost of additional staff while the Central Library, in Birmingham is closed. The funding for the extended opening hours on a Tuesday comes from the Central Library who are funding additional opening hours at 4 sites across Birmingham to cover some of the lost hours from Birmingham. The Central Library will close fully in June. The scheme will operate temporaryly while the Central Library is transfered from the old building to the new building.
Cllr Robert Alden, who last year led a campaign to stop cuts to the Erdington Library opening hours, said "this is wonderful news and goes to show just what a wonderful job the staff at Erdington Library do all year round for Erdington. The Library has been chosen because of the number of users it normally receives and the fact that so many users of the central library also come from the Erdington area. This is just further prove of how important Erdington Library is to the local community and the City as a whole. I hope this additional hours are well used so we can show the Council how beneficial they are and that they should be a permanent addition".
